What is the canícula?

The warmest season of the year is known by the name of Canicula. The term derives from canis, "dog", and refers to the star of Sirius (nicknamed "the Abrasive") of the constellation Canis maior, which is the brightest of the night sky during certain summer days in the northern hemisphere.

Our ancestors believed that when this happened, the popular star added its heat to that coming from the Sun, which gave rise to the warmer and less rainy period of summer

This phenomenon, which begins a few weeks after the start of summer, is also known as intra-festival, mid-summer or summer drought. Its onset, duration and intensity are associated with other atmospheric phenomena, such as the intensification of low-level winds in the Caribbean, the presence of semi-permanent high-pressure systems (anticyclones) in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, the incidence of solar radiation and sea surface temperature, among others that change over time.

They warn that the heat wave in Mexico will be very intense, with temperatures above 45 ° C

For this year, it is expected that the phenomenon will be presented more clearly in the states of Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Tabasco and a portion of San Luis Potosi, where temperatures can exceed 45 to 50 degrees Celsius.

The term of the heat wave is expected for next August 20. However, this date may vary because the weather conditions are constantly changing, and it is possible that the start date will go ahead or be delayed.
