What is orthosomnia and how can it affect you?

According to a study published in Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, the monthly magazine of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, some people "are taking the 'self-quantification' (of the parameters to sleep well) too far."

Orthosomnia produces irritability, concentration problems and apathy when rest does not match the way you think it should be.

In the report, specialists point out that "the use of sleep tracking devices is expanding rapidly and provides an opportunity for individuals to become involved in monitoring their sleep patterns." And that, apparently, could end up complicating sleeping even more.

With these results obtained from their applications, people self-diagnose disorders and, in the "perfectionist search of the ideal dream", can suffer from anxiety.

According to the scientists, the duration and quality of sleep are the factors that most concern people. However, they point out that the measurements of the applications are often not precise, and are counterproductive.

"These devices tend to overestimate sleep, and can serve to reinforce bad habits, encouraging us to prolong the time we spend in bed," they explain.

Although sleep is important and WHO indicates that lack of rest is a global problem today, obsessing with perfect sleep can cause problems.

Apparently, even when it comes to relaxing and resting, the key is finding balance.
