They manage to eliminate 100% human papillomavirus in women

Researchers from the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) of Mexico successfully verified the elimination of Human papillomavirus (HPV) focused on the uterine cervix. The technique with which this was achieved is not invasive and promises to be an effective method to prevent the disease, which is the second cause of death in women around the world.

The scientist of the National School of Biological Sciences (ENCB) Eva Ramón GallegosHe explained that the photodynamic therapy that was used, in addition to eradicating HPV, also eliminates premalignant lesions of cervical cancer at a very early stage, as found in this pilot study.

Photodynamic therapy consists of applying delta aminolevulinic acid in the cervix, a substance that adheres to damaged cells to remove them by means of laser beam.

The researcher said that, in the clinical phase, 420 patients from Oaxaca and Veracruz, and 29 from Mexico City have been treated with this therapy. They were infected with HPV, had premalignant lesions in the cervix, or had both conditions.

Before undergoing therapy, free of side effects, patients underwent studies of colposcopy, pap smear, hybrid capture, polymerase chain reaction and a biopsy to diagnose premalignant lesions or HPV infection.

The therapy was applied twice with an interval of 48 hours each and with an intensity according to the severity of each case.

Was achieved eliminate HPV by 100 percent of the patients who carried it without injury, 64.3 percent in women with HPV and injuries, and 57.2 percent in those with lesions without HPV.

The scheme applied also had a positive effect on the elimination of pathogenic bacterial strains.

"A percentage of the women had Chlamydia trachomatis (sexually transmitted) and / or Candida albicans infections, which were eliminated with treatment at 81 and 80%, respectively. The bacterial flora that contributes to the health of the genital tract was maintained virtually intact ”, said the specialist Gallegos.

The photodynamic technique had a great positive effect, which opens the possibility of making the treatment more effective, by using the scheme that adapts to the situation of each patient. It also gives hope not only to women with HPV, but to all those who want to prevent it.
