They find that spending 20 minutes outdoors is enough to reduce stress

Spending time outdoors is beneficial for health, we already knew that. What we perhaps knew was the amount needed. A team of researchers took it upon themselves to find out.

While many studies show the positive influence that exposure to nature has on health and well-being, there was little understanding about how much or how it should be to achieve a better effect.

The investigation "The experiences of urban nature reduce stress in the context of daily life based on salivary biomarkers"Was led by Dr. MaryCarol R. Hunter of the University of Michigan It was published in the specialized magazine Frontiers in Psychology.

According to experts, this study describes the relationship between the duration of an experience of nature and changes in two physiological biomarkers of stress: salivary cortisol and alpha-amylase.

During a period of eight weeks, it was asked 36 urban inhabitants that they had an experience of nature, defined as spend time in an outdoor place, at least three times a week for a period of 10 minutes or more.

The efficiency of nature's experience, measured according to the time invested, was greater between 20 and 30 minutes.

The researchers point out that these results provide a starting point for health professionals who prescribe time outdoors to their patients. This line of research is timely in view of the expansion of urbanization.
