After 20 years of research, specialists from Harvard University have discovered the virus that could cause the disease. Although for the moment underlying cause unknown, the study focuses on a possible suspect: the so-called Epstein-Barr virus.

The research was carried out over two decades on ten million US servicemen, 955 of whom were diagnosed with multiple sclerosis during their service.

The study showed something experts considered “a big step” in the fight against the disease: the risk of developing this type of sclerosis in individuals who were negative for the Epstein-Barr virus was multiplied by 32 after infection.

According to the researchers, “Most cases of multiple sclerosis could be prevented by stopping Epstein-Barr virus infection”. In turn, they conclude: “Going directly to him could lead to the discovery of a cure for this pathology.”
