Is it possible to paint the tiles in the bathroom or kitchen? Yes, and the reality is that they look very good, as if they were new.

Perhaps the colors or designs of the tiles that you have now already bore you or they went out of style and you want to completely renew them. Until recently, the only alternative was to change them, which implied a very high cost.

Fortunately, today there are different products that are special for painting tiles and they will save us money, time and headaches at the time of renovation. Let’s review everything you have to keep in mind: materials, steps to follow and tips.

Materials for painting tiles: what options are there on the market?

Let’s start with the paintings, since based on them we will choose the type of brush and other elements. We present you 4 different types of paints that will serve you for your tiles:

  1. Water-based enamel: It is a special glaze for tiles and does not need a previous primer coat, but you apply it directly on the clean surface. It dries quickly, it’s easy to clean, and the color palette is wide.
  2. Painting epoxy: It is characterized by being very resistant and durable, so it would be ideal to place in bathrooms where the contact of the tile with the water is much greater.
  3. Resin epoxy: it is the most resistant of all the options because, when mixed with other substances, it hardens and forms a waterproof layer. It takes a long time to dry. It is formed with two components that are mixed before applying and it is recommended to use gloves and a mask due to its strong odor and medium toxicity.
  4. Oil-based synthetic enamel: it is one of the fastest to dry, but also one of the least resistant.

On the other hand, you will need brushes, sponges, brushes, fine sandpaper, short hair roller, paper tape and protective plastics. Likewise, you must buy the primer or fixing base that we will explain later.

Steps to paint bathroom or kitchen tiles

Before starting with the step by step to renew your tiles, you must remove all objects that may make work difficult. Use the masking tape to cover the edges of the walls and other surfaces that you do not want to stain with paint.

The paper tape will allow you to mask those areas that you want to protect from paint spills.

1. Clean the tiles thoroughly

You can clean the surface with simple products such as hot water, soap, and a cloth or sponge. Both in the bathroom and in the kitchen there are usually traces of grease that you will have to remove with a degreaser or by adding a little vinegar. Then, pass the soapy water again and rinse well.

In the bathroom mold can accumulate in the joints, so you have to clean with bleach and a brush. Once everything is clean, let it dry for at least 24 hours before continuing with the process.

It is important that no traces of grease, fungus, soap or moisture remain on the tile. On the contrary, paint will not adhere properly.

2. Sand and lightly prime the tiles

To help the paint set well, you can fine sandpaper all of the tiles. Keep in mind to remove excess dust. Then, you are in a position to pass the sealer or primer coat.

It should be applied at the joints as well. The objective of this step is for the final paint to achieve better adhesion.

Some manufacturers advise that it is not necessary to apply this product previously, although you do not lose anything by doing it and you can achieve a better finish. Take into account the drying time indicated on the packaging.

3. Delimit the painting areas

In case you want to paint with more than one color or design a pattern, in this step you should put the masking tape according to what you have in mind. There are also templates with pre-made designs.

4. Paint the tiles

Now comes the fun part: painting the tiles. And more if you have chosen a combination of colors or designs.

Start at the joints with the brush and then use the roller for the rest. First you need to mix the paint well. If you notice air bubbles when you apply it, go over it immediately with a foam roller.

Allow to dry as directed in the product instructions. In case the tile is dark, don’t skip the primer which is white and it will help lighten the color. Similarly, you may need to apply two coats of paint to eradicate the dark base color.

In general terms, they are calculated between 8 and 13 square meters per liter of paint. In any case, in the store where you buy they will be able to advise you better.
