Home care after circumcision

In most cases, circumcision does not cause any problems. However, it is important to maintain some basic care so that the wound does not become infected.

Circumcision is a common and low-risk procedure, but it also demands special care to achieve an adequate recovery. It is more frequently practiced in young children, although it is also viable at any age.

There are different reasons for performing circumcision. It is almost always carried out for health reasons, but also for aesthetic, social or religious reasons.

Almost all post-circumcision care focus on keeping the area clean to avoid the risks of infection. Pain management and gradual return to activities are also important.

Circumcision and the importance of care

Circumcision is a surgical procedure performed on the penis to remove the foreskin. It is often indicated when there is phimosis. This is an anatomical condition in which the opening of the foreskin (which is the skin that covers the penis) is too narrow.

As it is a surgery, it requires the signing of an informed consent. The procedure takes between 20 and 30 minutes.

Local anesthesia is used in children., while with adults general anesthesia is usually used. After the intervention there is pain, discomfort and even difficulty moving. Observing the pertinent care is very important so that the wound does not become infected and heal properly.

Home care after circumcision in boys

The care that should be taken after circumcision varies depending on age. In children there are some specific measures.

Whenever the diaper is changed it is important to make sure that there are no traces of urine or faeces in the area where the circumcision was made. The best thing to do is clean the area with a soft cloth soaked in soap and water. Baby wipes should not be used as these could cause irritation.

Changing diapers requires a lot of caution in recently operated babies, to take care of the wound and not infect it.

After cleaning the area it is best to leave the baby without a diaper for a few minutes. In this way, the area dries in the open air and it is not necessary to rub with a towel so that it is free of moisture.

Change the diaper

After circumcision it is very important to change the diaper every 2 or 3 hours, at least. The presence of urine or feces can infect the wound and complicate the situation. So it’s best make sure the baby is always dry.

The most recommended is do not immerse the baby in water for the next 10 days to circumcision. It would be preferable to bathe him with a sponge soaked in mild soap and water.

Post circumcision care for adults

The patient can go home after surgery. The penis usually looks swollen and bruised for the next 2 days. It will also be partially bandaged.

Rest and moderate activity

You should get enough sleep and rest whenever you feel fatigued. However, it is advisable to try to walk slowly and without forcing yourself.

The walk can be increased gradually. No strenuous activity is recommended for 4 weeks after circumcision.

While the bandage is on, it is best to take sponge baths. When the doctor indicates it, the bandage should be removed.

After this, showers can be taken as normal. Comfortable, loose-fitting underwear should be worn. The important thing is that it does not cause any discomfort.

A cold compress on the groin is a good measure to relieve painespecially on the first day. The indicated thing is to leave it for a period of 10 to 20 minutes.

At the beginning it can be applied every 2 or 3 hours. Then every 6 or 8 hours. It is advisable to put on underwear so that the penis remains erect.

Local cold can relieve some symptoms. It is not convenient to use ice directly on the skin.


Medications must be taken as directed by the doctor.. This must be done strictly, especially with antibiotics.


It is not convenient to have sexual intercourse or masturbate in the 6 weeks post circumcision. After that period, it is appropriate to use a condom. Total healing occurs between 2 and 3 months after surgery.

When to see the doctor?

In most cases, circumcision heals and heals correctly when directions are followed basic. It is normal for the wound to bleed during the hours following the intervention. After 24 hours there should be no more bleeding. If it is registered, it must be consulted.

You should also go to a professional when the swelling is too pronounced, there is a red streak on the shaft of the penis, or there is any discharge. Likewise if there is a fever. These are all signs of a possible infection.

Any problem urinating should be consulted immediately. This includes difficulty urinating, pain or burning when urinating, excess urine or blood in it.

Although it is not usual, it is possible that after circumcision a complication known as Deep venous thrombosis. Symptoms are swelling and pain in one leg, redness or discoloration, and a feeling of warmth in the limb.

Careful monitoring of the wound is key, especially during the first days after circumcision. Likewise, punctually attend all scheduled controls.
