Goodbye to sedentary lifestyle: a study shows that standing increases caloric expenditure

A study carried out by researchers from the University of Granada (UGR) recommends spending more time standing up to increase energy expenditure and combat sedentary lifestyle and its negative impact on health, calculating that 45 kilocalories are burned more for every six hours of standing than lying or sitting.

One of the applications of the study could be the implantation of adjustable tables in height to work standing, very fashionable in the Nordic countries, to combat sedentary lifestyle at work. These tables allow to adjust their height depending on the position with which the user wants to work, so they can be used both for sitting and standing.

As indicated by the main author of this article, Francisco J. Amaro-Gahete"Spaniards spend between 8 and 10 hours sitting or lying down a day, not counting the hours of sleep, therefore, if we fight sedentary lifestyle with small changes in lifestyle such as spending more time standing, this could reduce the risk of developing diseases such as obesity or type 2 diabetes ".

In this article, researchers have shown that a good way to reduce the effects of sedentary lifestyle is reduce the time that we remain seated and lying down, encouraging the standing, since the research has analyzed the energy expenditure in each of the positions.

"Savers" and "wasters"

The scientists used a sample formed by 53 young adults, which have been classified into two types: "savers" and "wasters" of energy, depending on the energy consumption they consume when they are sitting or lying down and standing up.

"Savers consume very little energy in their activities and, therefore, the difference between sitting or lying and standing is practically nil, while wasteful people, however, burn approximately 10 percent more energy when they change their energy. to sit or lie down to stand, "explains Francisco Amaro.
