Blood stains on furniture and sofas

If there are blood stains on your chair, furniture or a sofa cushion, follow the recommendations released by the University of Illinois. Proceed to mix 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid with 2 cups of cold water. Then moisten a cloth with this mixture and wipe the stain until it absorbs the liquid, but do not rub it.

If the stain does not disappear in this step, repeat the process as many times as necessary until it is removed. Once it disappears, use a damp sponge with cold water and let it dry.

Leather furniture

If the furniture is leather mix mild soap in cold water, shake and create a lather. Then apply with a sponge on the stain. Proceed to rub taking care not to spread it. Afterwards, dry with a clean cloth.

For synthetic fiber furniture

In this case, mix one part glycerin with one part dishwasher, a few drops of ammonia and 8 parts cold water. Then moisten a cloth in the previous mixture and cover the blood stain. Press gently until all is absorbed.

Repeat the process as many times as necessary until it disappears. After this, rinse well and let it dry in the open air. Try to remove all traces of ammonia.

Remember that toxic products have to be out of the reach of children and use rubber gloves to handle them. Also, keep adequate ventilation.

Stains, once removed, should be air dried carefully to protect the fibers of the fabrics.

Remove blood from fabrics

If your furniture is covered by a cloth protector or blanket Run the stained canvas through a stream or dampen with cold water. This helps to remove as much blood as possible before following the other steps.

In case the blood is dry, scrape it off with a knife. Then proceed to mix ½ liter of warm water with ½ teaspoon of liquid dish soap and 1 teaspoon of ammonia. Let the fabric soak in this mixture for about 15 minutes, rubbing the back where the stain is if possible.

Put the same old mixture back on the stained fabric for about 15 more minutes. After this new soaking process, rinse with enough water. If the stain is very old, it may take 1 hour or more. Finally, Wash the fabric and let it air dry.

Stains on upholstery

To remove blood from upholstery, proceed to mix 1 tablespoon of liquid dishwasher with 2 cups of cold water. Then rub the stain with a clean cloth impregnated with the previous mixture and pat dry until liquid is completely absorbed. Repeat the steps above until the stain is gone.

Blood stains on carpets

If you find blood stains on your carpet, try to act as soon as possible to remove them permanently. If the rug is made of leather, consider the following actions:

  • Remove excess blood by applying light pressure with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Then rub a cloth impregnated with a mild detergent and a few drops of ammonia.
  • Proceed to rinse with a cloth dampened in cold water until the stain disappears
  • Let it dry outdoor.

In case the carpet is made of synthetic fiber, consider the following aspects:

  • Mix 1 teaspoon of mild detergent with ½ cup of cold water.
  • Spread this mixture directly or with a wet cloth on the stain.
  • Rub until the stain is gone and blot the excess liquid.

If the stain persists mix 1 tablespoon of ammonia with ½ cup of water. Apply a cloth moistened with the previous substance on the stained carpet and rub until it disappears. Remove any remaining liquid and air dry.

Dried blood stains

In the event that the carpet has traces of dried blood, use a blunt knife and try to brush the stain to remove it. Then apply an odorless, flavorless meat tenderizer mixed with a similar amount of water, as this compound can reduce protein, making it easier to remove.

Leave the paste on for 15 to 30 minutes and pat dry with a clean towel. As a next step, mix liquid detergent with cold water and rinse the affected area.

Another practice is to moisten the dried blood with hydrogen peroxide at a maximum concentration of 3%. Then let it dry until it disappears. In this case, no rinsing is necessary.

The use of chemical products to remove blood stains must be done carefully due to the risk of poisoning.

Fresh blood stains

To remove fresh blood from carpets, follow these steps:

  • Press the blood stain with a clean cloth to remove as much of the blood as possible with light touches. Try to do it from the edge towards the center and not rub it so as not to spread it even more.
  • Spray cold water until damp, but not soggy.
  • Allow moisture to absorb and towel dry, pressing on the blood.
  • Keep drying and moistening until the stain fades. This is repeated as many times as necessary.

In case the stain does not disappear, use a salt paste. To do this, mix salt with cold water until you get a paste. Then put this paste on the stain and leave it for a few minutes. Proceed to dry with a clean towel. Repeat as much as necessary.

It is important that you consider vacuuming the carpet if you apply the salt paste with cold wateras it can damage the fibers over time. Another method is to mix 1 to 2 teaspoons of liquid dishwasher with 1 cup of cold water to wet a cloth with this mixture and apply to the stained area.

In case the stain does not come out, try using shampoo and then ammonia. To do this, mix the shampoo or dishwasher with 1 cup of water and spray it on the stain and let it act for about 5 minutes. Then make a mixture that contains 1 tablespoon of household ammonia with a cup of water that is at room temperature.

For all these methods, brush or vacuum the carpet once it is dry, as this allows the fibers to be restored. Try to air dry, where there is good air circulation, or use an electric fan.

Act quickly

Consider that treating blood stains once they appear is the most effective way to remove them. For this it is better to do it as soon as possible. Also note that, once it has been washed and dried, it is very difficult to eradicate. Keep in mind, in the same way, that cold water works better.
