Ashitaba: the Japanese plant that favors cell regeneration

Our body is constantly renewed. The simplest way to notice it is to observe your skin. When you get hurt, for example, it closes layer by layer until it regenerates again.

Plants also have this natural ability to regenerate. But scientists have discovered that there is one in particular, which stands out for it: its name is ashitaba and it is a japanese plant.

What is unique? Stimulates autophagy, which is precisely this natural process of regeneration of diseased or damaged cells. This mechanism is essential both to prevent diseases, since it eliminates toxins, and to delay aging.

Researchers at the University of Graz, in Austria, discovered a flavonoid called 4,4’-dimethoxichalcona (DMC) and found in ashitaba (Angelica keiskei). The study was published in the journal Nature.

The flavonoids they are pigments found in vegetables and that help them protect themselves from damage caused by ultraviolet rays, environmental pollution, and other oxidizing agents. Our body cannot produce it, so it gets it from vegetables, seeds, fruits and drinks such as wine, for example.

According to traditional oriental medicine, this Japanese plant, containing flavonoids, promotes healing of small wounds, prevents infections and improves overall health. In addition, it is used in cases of heartburn or reflux, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, constipation, fluid retention, food poisoning, among others.

The scientists analyzed 180 flavonoids in search of new natural compounds to counteract premature aging and discovered ashitaba as one of the most important natural sources.

While there are many natural substances that have an anti-aging effect, ashitaba would be more effective.

In their experiments, the researchers discovered that adding it to food could increase longevity by 20%. That is why they estimate that it could have a very important medicinal potential in cases of diseases associated with age.
