7 myths about losing weight that have no scientific support

When it comes to losing weight, word of mouth tends to spread too much outdated, partially true or completely wrong information. It is important to consult with a specialist before adopting any of these habits, since what is at stake is nothing more or nothing less than one's own health and proper nutrition.

These are seven myths that we have probably all heard and surely we have believed sometimes.

All calories are the same

Calories are a measure of energy, and it has been said that two foods with the same number of calories contain the same amount of energy. This reality has been distorted and has led many to think that, as a result, the number of calories consumed must be reduced to the maximum, regardless of their origin.

But the truth is that calories from different sources have different effects on the body. Several studies have shown that replacing carbohydrates and fats with proteins can speed up our metabolism, reduce hunger and improve hormonal functions.

Overweight is overcome with willpower

Many have the belief that if we try hard enough, we will overcome overweight. While this may be true in some cases, obesity is a complex disease involving many factors, and therefore pretending that the same solution works for everyone is very unrealistic.

There are genetic components in the predisposition to obesity, as well as relationships with other diseases, such as hypothyroidism, depression, and many more. In addition, the processes of weight regulation usually work abnormally in people with obesity, and that complicates the process of losing weight or staying within a healthy margin.

Losing weight can be a matter of dedication for some, but for others it will be a complicated medical problem.

Drink water with lemon fasting thins

Water with lemon is often attributed to detoxifying and beneficial functions for hair, skin and the immune system, and it is believed that taking it on an empty stomach (or even taking it as breakfast and nothing else) helps us lose weight.

It has been shown that water with lemon keeps us hydrated, is very low in calories and generates a feeling of fullness, but nothing indicates that there are nutritional differences between drinking normal water or lemon water. Both versions offer the same benefits.

You have to avoid carbohydrates

It is a scientific fact that low carbohydrate diets help us lose weight. But this does not mean that they are themselves the problem. For centuries humans have based our diet on carbohydrates and the epidemic of obesity that is lived today did not begin until the end of the last century.

The key seems to be not being in the limitation of all carbohydrates, but only in refined ones. But unprocessed foods high in carbohydrates are healthy and necessary.

You have to avoid fats

Body fat is the product of accumulated fats, so it is easy to think that you have to avoid high-fat foods and problem solved, is not it?

Fats or lipids are one of the five essential nutrient groups that we all must include in our diets if we pretend they are healthy. In fact, there is nothing in fats as such that makes them particularly dangerous. Their bad reputation is partly because they are contained in high amounts in junk food.

As long as the calories stay balanced and the food is healthy in general, fats do not have to be a problem for anyone.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day

Some have breakfast as a kind of supernatural food with special magical powers. A study showed that, over a period of four months, skipping or not skipping breakfast did not have any significant impact on weight, neither to gain it nor to lose it.

What has been demonstrated is that people who skip breakfast tend to develop other unhealthy habits with regard to their diet. But beyond that, breakfast does not seem to have any special capacity with respect to the other meals of the day.

Diets to lose weight work

It is possible that many have fallen into this trap of believing that by making a drastic change in the short term we can obtain a noticeable long-term effect on our weight. Although some of the miraculous diets that abound on the Internet are very seductive, do not be fooled.

A study showed that 85% of people who lose weight by dieting end up recovering before a year is over. Repeating the regimen each time you gain weight again is not healthy either.

Changes in diet should be focused on improving style and quality of life, not sudden weight loss. In this way, weight is lost more stable, effective and sustainable in the long term.
