5 self-exams that all women must do to take care of their health

Going to the doctor on a regular basis is essential to know if everything is in order, since there are some diseases that can be treated without major complications when they are detected quickly. In the case of women, breast cancer is one of them. That is why it is so important to comply with all the controls.

Also, be aware of what we feel is fundamental, although it may seem obvious. There are some people who are reluctant to go to a doctor's office for fear, and let go of symptoms that might indicate that something is not right.

As a complementary tool, every woman could perform some self-exams at home to detect the presence of certain diseases.

Know in this note what they are, but do not forget that they never replace the medical consultation.

1. Breast self-examination

> It is recommended to control the breasts at least once a month in the week after menstruation, which is the time of lower breast tension. Thanks to campaigns against breast cancer, the way to do it is becoming more and more widespread.

Although it is not an infallible detection method, it is useful. Many women, for example, have come to a consultation after having detected lumps in their breasts. Still, lumps are not everything. When the bust is analyzed, it is also considered if it has redness, swelling, rash or if it presents pain, among other symptoms.

Therefore you must remember that from 45 or 50 years, mammography should be done every two years. This study can help detect tumors in early stages.

The self-examination includes an observational part, which involves looking in the mirror and paying attention to possible changes in the skin, shape or volume of the breasts; and the palpation that is done with the fingertips.

2. Control of fat in the abdomen

Petra Sanz, member of the Expert Council of the Spanish Heart Foundation, points out that the fat that accumulates in the abdomen can be more dangerous than having a few extra kilos.

"When there is too much, you have more risk of developing metabolic syndrome, which affects about 25% of the adult population and increases the risk of suffering from various cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure, diabetes, acute myocardial infarction or stroke", points out

But, When is it considered that there is abdominal obesity? Well, when the perimeter of the waist measures more than 102 centimeters in men and 88 in women.

Therefore, it is recommended to measure yourself with a tape measure at home at least once a year. The measurement should be taken in the middle area between the last edge of the ribs and the upper edge of the hip bone.

3. Control your pressure

Specialists recommend starting to control blood pressure on a regular basis from 40. For people with direct family members who suffer from hypertension, it is recommended to start earlier. If you have a device, you can do it yourself at home, or you can ask to have your blood pressure measured at a pharmacy.

If it is normal, you just have to check it periodically. If it is elevated, it is necessary to go to the doctor to treat it correctly.

4. Polka dot control

> Knowing your moles well will help you detect if any of them change their appearance, grow or show any anomaly. That could help you find skin cancer early, for example.

Do it yourself in front of the mirror and ask someone else to examine your back too.

What do you pay attention to? To asymmetry, irregular edges, changes in color and size. You also have to look if they are homogeneous.

Each person has their own polka dot shape, but if there is one that stands out above the others, it is important to check it. It does not necessarily have to be something bad, but it is always better to rule it out in a medical consultation.

5. Changes in the menstrual period

Beyond the usual controls of gynecology, it is recommended to be alert to changes in menstruation: irregular bleeding, abundant, unusual pain, changes in flow, pain or burning when urinating.

This could help detect infections or diseases early. For that we must lose the taboo of looking and exploring our body. Some applications that help you detect changes can help you register anomalies.
